Where this rate comes from
Rather than guessing or using a stale built-in table, this calculator fetches the current reference rate directly from the European Central Bank's published data every time you change the amount or currencies. If that fetch ever fails, the calculator says so plainly rather than quietly showing an outdated number.
Frequently asked questions
How current is the exchange rate shown?
It comes from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, published once each business day around 16:00 CET. There's no update on weekends or EU bank holidays — the most recent business day's rate is shown instead.
Is this the same rate I'd get at a bank or when traveling?
No — banks, card networks and currency exchange counters add their own margin on top of the reference rate, sometimes a substantial one. This calculator shows the underlying mid-market reference rate, which is a useful benchmark but not what you'll actually receive after fees.
Why does it say 'couldn't load live rates' sometimes?
This calculator only shows a rate it just fetched — it never falls back to a cached or guessed number, since a rate displayed as current should actually be current. If the rate provider is briefly unreachable, try again in a moment.
Why isn't my local currency in the list?
Rates come from the European Central Bank, which publishes reference rates for around 30 major world currencies. Less widely traded currencies outside that list aren't available through this particular data source.
