Frequently asked questions
Is this the same formula as the Navy method?
No — despite both being circumference-based, the Army's formula uses different fitted coefficients than the Navy's. Plugging the same measurements into each can give meaningfully different results. This calculator uses the Army's own current formula.
Why did the Army change to a one-site method in 2023?
A large research study (the Army Comprehensive Body Composition Study) found the new single-waist-measurement approach was about 10% more accurate than the older multi-site method, while being simpler to administer consistently.
Is this an official compliance check?
No — this is an unofficial planning estimate. Official Army Body Composition Program determinations follow command procedures with trained personnel taking the measurements.
